When a client is scared, most building professionals do one of two things. They drown them in technical language — enough terminology that the client feels like they should trust you. Or they minimise it. “She’ll be right.” “Every house has those.”
Both make it worse.
The first reinforces the power gap that created the fear. The second sends the client home wondering what else they weren’t told.
What people need isn’t to feel less afraid. It’s to feel less alone in their fear.
That means having someone beside them who understands the risk, has seen it before, can explain it clearly, and will help them navigate it — not despite their fear, but alongside it.
